We tried to avoid it as much as we could, but mother nature decided had to winterize our RV.

We didn’t want to have to go through the process because we are taking the van down South for the winter so we were hoping to avoid it all together. The plumbing system and the heating system in our van are connected and it all works great so far so messing with it and winterizing seemed less than ideal.

Luckily one of our friends mentioned that a sudden freeze was coming in, so we checked the weather for where we have the van stored and saw it was going to be below freezing for several hours over night.

We were not prepared.

I was in denial that we would need to winterize. Now I know that we need to plan to leave earlier next year, or just not be home at all when it starts to get cold.

Luckily, there is a very active and knowlegable Facebook group for owners of Hymer Aktivs, so we reviewed the detailed instructions provided by the group. Of course we needed items we don’t have. We found the hand pump needed to properly winterize on Amazon for overnight delivery – it would be delivered by 8:00am the next morning – gotta love Amazon! And the rest of the supplies could be purchased at a regular store like Walmart or a grocery store.

That night was a close to sleepness night for me. I was watching the real-time temperature readings for the town where we store our van. Rule of thumb, according to the facebook group, is that you’re likely in trouble with freezing plumbing and possible bursting/damage if temperatures go below freezing for 4 or more consecutive hours. The temps were hovering right around 31 degrees for just under 4 hours. I was also checking the Amazon tracking on the hand pump, it was estimated to arrive between 4:00am – 8:00am. By the time 9:30am rolled around and the pump hadn’t arrived, I gave up hope for it. We headed for the mecca of all things – Walmart. Luckily, Dan found a hand pump that would work, we got the other supplies and headed to winterize Carolina.

Without the useful instructions from the Hymer facebook group, I would have been completely lost. I am so grateful for this group and the generous, knowledgeable people who contribute to it. We were able to follow the instructions with ease, even though we were nervous the entire time. I think we did it correctly, but I guess there’s only one way to find out, and time will tell.
